On the Brink - Hank Paulson

On the Brink is Hank Paulson's personal recount of the financial crisis of 2007-08. This book was widely expected by specialists and non-specialists alike (at one point, it reached number 4 in Amazon's sales list), if nothing else because Paulson was probably the main decision maker during the 2007-08 financial crisis, which led to the nationalization of a tremendous number of American financial institutions and to the failure of Lehman Brothers.

On the Brink was widely reviewed when it appeared (The EconomistThe Daily BeastNYTHuffington Post, and The Independent, just to mention Google's preferences). The reviews and their quality vary greatly. Some of them argue that Paulson is responsible of letting Lehman fail while nationalizing the other financial institutions, pushing the United States to the worst crisis in generations; others mention that Paulson was jumping from one fire to the other without looking at the big picture. The reality, as usual, probably lies in the middle. Paulson was, indeed, always in the rush and catching up with events, but he was also the person who took all the decisions. Though he probably doesn't realize it, Paulson's book shows clearly how he presented all the decisions regarding bail-outs as faits accomplis to his boss, the President of the United States, who had no choice but sign. This has been confirmed by former aides of the White House, most notably by Matt Latimer, speechwriter of George W. Bush. Remarkably, while Paulson praises Bush constantly, Latimer is clear on the disenchantment between the two characters, and between Treasury and the White House in general. I encourage those who have read Paulson's book to compare it with Latimer's article.

Most of the autobiographies and memoirs written by policymakers are a boring recollection of facts, a listing of praises (or lack thereof) to other policymakers, and a few juicy gossips. On the Brink is not the exception to this rule. Paulson's communication skills are poor, and his writing is straightforward as a result of his lack of style, not because of training of refinement (at the end, Paulson acknowledges that a team helped him polish the book). What makes interesting this book is the vertiginous speed at which facts evolved: banks and financial institutions were falling basically every other week, and one guy and his staff were in charge of fixing everything around the clock and tell the American people that things were going to be OK every Sunday morning.

The value of On the Brink is neither literary, nor factual: the financial crisis created an industry of books about the crisis which describe facts in a more vivid and entertaining way (also, remember, that some of the facts of the financial crisis were under investigation when Paulson published his book, so gossips and rumors are obviously absent).

If there is one reason to read On the Brink is to get a firsthand approach, as limited as it is in terms of communication skills, of the financial crisis. Shortly, this will be a great document for historians in 50 or even 20 years. For this generation, other books might have a greater added value.

The City of God - St. Augustine

I found the edition of The City of God published by The Modern Library in 1950, translated from Latin by Marcus Dods, D. D., and with an introduction by Thomas Merton. The book is composed of 22 books; I couldnt make it after the 10th.

In fairness, Merton makes the following advertisement which I fully endorse after struggling with Augustine's prose unsuccessfully:

"The first of these suggestions is this: since, after all, The City of God reflects much of St. Augustine's own personality and is colored by it, the reader who has never met Augustine ought to go first of all to the Confessions. Once he gets to know the saint, he will be better able to understand Augustine's version of society. Then, no one who is not a specialist, with a good background of history or of theology or of philosophy, ought not to attempt to read the City, for the first time, beginning at page one. The living heart of the City is found in Book Nineteen, and this is the section that will make the most immediate appeal to us today because it is concerned with the theology of peace. However, Book Nineteen cannot be understood all by itself. The best source for solutions to the most problems it will raise is Book Fourteen, where the origin of the two Cities is sketched, in an essay on original sin. Finally, the last Book (Twenty-Two), which is perhaps the finest of them all, and a fitting climax to the whole work, will give the reader a broad view of St. Augustine's whole scheme because it describes the end of the City of God, the communal vision of the elect in Paradise, the contemplation which is the life of the 'City of Vision' in heaven and the whole purpose of man's creation."

So, I guess that I will read the Confessions and will report accordingly.

Alternatively, we always have youtube and its unbiased contributors:

Domicile Conjugal - Francois Truffaut

From So Simple a Beginning - Charles Darwin and Edward O. Wilson

From So Simple a Beginning collects Charles Darwin's 4 masterpieces: Voyage of the H. M. S. Beagle, On the Origin of Species, The Descent of Man, and The Expression of Emotions in Man and Animals. One might actually wonder what is the value of buying a volume of 1700 pages for 25 dollars (in Amazon) including texts easily findable online for free (like, for instance, here), or explanations about the evolution theory in formats more understandable for the 21st audience.

The answer is easy: there is no value. If want to understand Darwin's thoughts, you can indeed read the texts online or, if you are in a hurry, watch this video that explains evolution in 5 minutes. Darwin's texts are mostly unintelligible from a modern reader's perspective, and the fact that we have developed more friendly tools to understand his theory is probably a nice tribute to Darwin himself.

From So Simple a Beginning is not valuable from the perspective of the added value given by the editor to a work published previously. Edward O. Wilson just presents the works of Darwin with a short introduction and an even more succinct conclusion, mainly focused on Darwin's thoughts on god and religion. He could have added footnotes explaining where Darwin was proved right or wrong.

Shortly, From So Simple a Beginning can be a very good decorator. It will actually make you look smart: after all, it is a two pounds book... But there are cheaper and more effective ways to get to know Charles Darwin.

Introduction to the Philosophy of History - G. W. F. Hegel and Leo Rauch

"In English, we like a word to have one and the same meaning throughout a given philosophic text. Hegel does not work that way."

When aliens come to this planet, we will have a hard work explaining how the works of an unintelligible philosopher have so much influence on the way we think. Every generation produces its own interpreter of Hegel's philosophy of History. Leo Rauch did it in the 1980s, just like Alexandre Kojève did it 20 years earlier. In an exercise that, if nothing else, shows how complicated is reading Hegel, Fukuyama actually interpreted Kojève's interpretation for his famous book The End of History.

The Philosophy of History is one of the most influential books on Western philosophy despite (or probably because of) its impenetrability. In this book, Hegel tries to prove logically that History has one objective: the establishment of a free and self-conscious social existence through the guidance of Providence, which Hegel equates with Reason and God. The most accomplished example of a political entity that has reached pure autonomy is, according to Hegel, the Prussian State. The election of Prussia is not casual.Hegel was actually in the payroll of the Prussian Government and received medals for his services to it during the Napoleonic invasions. Whether Hegel sincerely believed what he wrote about Prussia, or whether he did it keep his job and position is unclear. In any case, Hegel was the first in an endless series of public financed intellectuals who live out of public money and say that whatever the government does is the best.

Hegel didn't live enough to see Darwin's theory on evolution. It is impossible to assert whether Darwin's theory of evolution would have challenged or reinforced Hegel's ideas on the pre-determination of History. It is clear that the idea of History as a process pre-determined to reach an end can only be printed and be successful in a period of collective euphoria. Hegel presented it when Prussia was becoming the predominant power in History, and Fukuyama recycled it in the aftermath of the fall of the USSR. It is hard to accept, for instance, that History converges towards reason and autonomy in periods of humanitarian or economic crisis, or right after the Holocaust and World War II.

A Theory of Justice - John Rawls

A Theory of Justice is John Rawls' most famous and important book. As I said in my previous post on Rawls, the book quickly became a target for philosophers of all ideologies and principles, which made Rawls reconsider his argument several times. At the end of his life,  Rawls' ideas about morals and politics were but a shadow of what they used to be in A Theory of Justice, and he was regarded with a strange mix of admiration and pity by most people who know his story.

A Theory of Justice is an extremely ambitious book. In Rawls' own words, its aim "is to present a conception of justice which generalizes and carries to a higher level of abstraction the familiar theory of the social contract as found, say, in Locke, Rousseau, and Kant (p. 11)." Though Rawls would make efforts to distinguish his theories from Immanuel Kant's, the reality is that his theory is an application of Kant's moral principles to public policy. The original position, which is the cornerstone of Rawls' entire argument, is, in his own words, "a procedural interpretation of Kant's conception of autonomy and the categorical imperative. The principles regulative of the kingdom of ends are those that would be chosen in this position, and the description of this situation enables us to explain the sense in which acting from these principles expresses our nature as free and equal rational persons."

Reading A Theory of Justice is actually kind of sad because it shows how far we are from the ideal of a Kantian society, where all human beings are treated as ends in themselves, and where public deliberation and the common good are the guiding principles. In short, a Rawlsian society is one where public life is based on morals, and morality is based on rationality. To give a practical example, a Kantian/Rawlsian society should look a little bit like this:

"Representatives are not, to be sure, mere agents of their constituents, since they have a certain discretion and they are expected to exercise their judgment in enacting legislation. In a well-ordered society they must, nevertheless, represent their constituents in the substantive sense: they must seek first to pass just and effective  legislation, since this is a citizen's first interest in government, and secondly, they must further their constituents' other interests insofar as these are consistent with justice."

Compare this with the petty debates of real life politics and cry.

A Theory of Justice is nothing more than a complicated thought experiment. We will never be able to enter a veil of ignorance with members of past and previous generations to determine what is the best way to organize society. Instead, Rawlsian theory should be seen as an ideal to emulate, which has actually taken place in some Western democracies: maternity leave, fair labor regulations, and other measures adopted in the social arena in the last 40 years were inspired by Rawls.

The operational assumption underlying Rawls' theory is that rational human beings under a veil of ignorance can agree on an idea of justice. By bringing this assumption down, you tear down Rawls' argument with his own weapons (other critiques, like Nozick's, are but a remake of the utilitarian argument, which Rawls addresses throughout his book). The idea that there are competing versions of justice that can be defended rationally is called intuitionism. Rawls' defense against it is actually very shaky.

To give you an example of how intuitionism works, imagine you are in the original position (i.e., you are a perfectly rational human being without vested interest or pre-conceived conceptions of the good), you have a flute and you have to give it to one of three children. The first child says she deserves the flute because she is the only one who can play it. The second one counters that she is the poorest and has no toys, so the flute would give her something to play. Last, the third children says she deserves the flute because she built it. Rawlsian theory assumes that society can reach an unanimous agreement on which children should get the flute. That assumption is wrong.

The example of the flute is presented by Amartya Sen (himself a personal friend of Rawls) in The Idea of Justice (yes, the title is a conscious appeal to Rawls), probably the most powerful and best articulated critique to Rawls. If I can recommend you to read one book about justice, it would be Sen's: it summarizes Rawls' theory and presents it in in intelligible English, and provides an alternative to it.

Yo, Mi, Me, Contigo - Joaquín Sabina
